Case Study- AssistLift - Refuse Collection Points

Historically, access for collection of the refuse was gained through wooden doors however, due to weathering and continual use these were no longer deemed suitable. They were replaced by standard steel chequerplate covers which required lifting & sliding to gain access to the collection pit. Unfortunately, these proved to be not only cumbersome to move, but also a risk to the health and safety of refuse collection operatives, residents and visitors, particularly if the covers had been displaced.

Working in conjunction with Health & Safety personnel, both the housing and cleansing departments decided that they were no longer prepared to accept this hazardous situation, and the search began for a cover that would overcome all of the current problems. Ideally the cover needed to be a single leaf cover large enough for the opening, flush to the surface, hinged, lockable, robust, lightweight and simple to operate.

The GATIC Halliday Assistlift access cover satisfied all of these requirements with the added bonus of facilitating a rapid and simple installation. The wide range of cover sizes also enabled an almost made-to-measure match for openings. Following the successful trial installation and operational testing of one unit, the remaining twenty-two covers were installed the following month.

The covers have proven to be ideal for the refuse collection. Each cover is quickly and safely unlocked, raised and automatically heald upright by a safety catch. Once the refuse is removed, the catch is released and the cover is closed using minimum effort thanks to the assist-lift feature.
